Since March, more than 50 people are known to have set themselves on fire in protest against the repressive Chinese occupation of Tibet.
Self-immolations and protests are now taking place over a widening area of Tibet.
Viewed in the context of other recent significant protests, the self-immolations underline that the current crisis in Tibet represents a fundamental rejection of China's occupation.

Yungdrung, Zathoe Town, Yushu, 29 September 2012
The 27-year-old set himself on fire in the centre of Zatoe town. Security personnel took him away. His well-being and whereabouts cannot currently be confirmed. Free Tibet has no more information at this time. Read more

The two men, one monk and one former monk, set themselves on fire outside Kirti Monastery. They later died. Read more

The two men set themselves on fire on what is now known as Martyr's Street in Ngaba Town. Lungtok died shortly afterwards. Tashi was beaten and removed by security forces. He later died. Read more

The 21-year-old monk set fire to himself on the main road in Ngaba. He was reported to be still alive, his upper body badly injured, when security personnel drove him away in a vehicle. He died soon after.

The 18-year-old monk set himself on fire inside Tsodun Kirti Monastery in Barkham County, eastern Tibet. He died at the scene. Read more
Tsewang Dorjee, Damshung County, 7 July 2012
Tsewang Dorjee set himself on fire in a town near the Tibetan capital Lhasa. Chinese security personnel quickly extinguished the flames and removed the man, and his current well-being and whereabouts remain unknown. Detentions and forced relocations followed the removal of the man from the town's marketplace. Read more
Dekyi Choezom, Jyekundo, 27 June 2012
Dekyi Choezom, who is approximately 40 years old, set fire to herself alongside a land rights protest. 70 Tibetan families were protesting the Chinese reconstruction plan, after the 2010 earthquake. Read more
Nyawang Norpal and Tenzin Kaldrup, both died, Zathod Township, 20 June 2012
These young men set fire to themselves in Zathod Township, Eastern Tibet. Tenzin Kaldrup died at the scene and Nyawang Norpal died a few weeks later. They left letters saying they were self-immolating for the sake of all Tibetans. Read more
Tamdrin Thar, Markethang, 15 June 2012, died
The Tibetan nomad, who was in his early 60s, set fire to himself outside the Chinese People’s Armed Police compound in Markethang, Eastern Tibet. He died at the scene. Read more

Two Tibetans set themselves on fire in front of the iconic Jokhang Temple in the centre of the old city. Chinese forces moved in quickly to remove any signs of disturbance and Lhasa was placed under heavy military restrictions. Read more

Sonam and Choephak Kyap, who are cousins, self-immolated together in front of Jonang Dzamthang monastery in Barma Township, Dzamthang County, Ngaba, Eastern Tibet. Security forces were quickly mobilised to the township. Read more

A 20-year-old Tibetan monk called Sherab set fire to himself in Ngaba, Eastern Tibet in protest at China's policies in Tibet. Sherab died at the scene. Read more

The father-of-three in his 40s, walked out of a nearby hotel, shouted: “Let His Holiness return to Tibet” and then set himself on fire. Thousands gathered in the local Dolma Square. Read more

The 20-year-old monk set fire to himself in front of Kirti Monastery on 16 March. While in flames, Lobsang raised his fist in the air in the Tibetan gesture of freedom. He died on 18 March. Read more
Jamyang Palden, Rongwo Town, 14 March 2012, died
The monk, who is in his 30s, set himself on fire near Rongwo monastery. Monks took his body back to the monastery from a local hospital, fearing his arrest by the Chinese authorities. He died on 29 September. Read more
Gepey, Ngaba Town, 10 March, died
The 18-year-old monk from Kirti Monastery set himself on fire behind the military camp in Ngaba Town. The military took the body away. His family was forced to hold his funeral immediately. Read more
Dorjee, Chara Township, 5 March, died
Dorjee, aged 18, set fire to himself near Chara Township, Ngaba County. An eyewitness reported seeing Dorjee set himself on fire near a bridge outside the township and then walk in flames to a government office building where he collapsed. He died at the scene. Read more
Rinchen, Ngaba Town, 4 March, died
The mother of four, self-immolated in Ngaba Town, in front of the police station which has been established by the main gate into Kirti Monastery. She died at the scene. While in flames Rinchen called out: “Tibet needs Freedom and Gyalwa Rinpochen (the Dalai Lama) needs to return to Tibet.” Read more
Tsering Kyi, Nyima Town, 3 March 2012, died
The 20-year-old, set fire to herself and died at a vegetable market in Machu county in eastern Tibet. Just days before she commented: “In Ngaba and other areas of Tibet, Tibetans are burning themselves. We should do something for Tibet – life is meaningless if we don’t do something for Tibet.” Read more

The 18-year-old set himself on fire near the Jonang Dzamthang Monastery. The monks removed his body to the monastery. Barma Township had been the site of an incident where Chinese forces shot dead another young man, just weeks before. Read more

The monk was a teacher at the Bongthak Monastery and a member of the Democratic Management Committee of the monastery. He died after self-immolating. Read more

The 19-year-old monk from Kirti Monastery set fire to himself in Ngaba Town. He reportedly survived but he was forcibly removed by Chinese forces and his current whereabouts and well-being is unknown. Two young men and a monk were believed to have been beaten at the scene. Read more
Tenzin Choedon, Ngaba, 11 February 2012, died
The 18-year-old nun set fire to herself outside her nunnery, Dechen Chokorling Nunnery, in Ngaba. She later died.
Tenzin was calling out slogans of protest against the Chinese government when she self-immolated.

A monk from the La Monastery, in his thirties, set himself on fire. He is said to be alive, but in serious condition. He was taken by security personnel from the site of the self-immolation.
Rigzin Dorjee, Ngaba, 8 February 2012, died
A 19-year old former Kirti monk set themselves on fire according to local secondary sources. He died of his injuries on 21 February. An eyewitness has reported that two monks were detained at the site.

Lobsang Jamyang, Ngaba, 14 January 2012, died
A former monk of Adu Gon Gama monastery. He died after setting fire to himself in Ngaba town.
It is believed that he died at the scene but Chinese authorities forcibly removed him. A crowd of local people gathered to protest and to call for the return of his body. Chinese authorities responded with brutal force.
Sonam Wangyal, Darlag, 8 January 2012, died
This high-ranking lama from the Darlag Monastery is believed to have set himself on fire in the Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture on 8 January. Xinhua, the Chinese state media agency, confirmed that he died.
Radio Free Asia says that he pasted posters around the town and shouted slogans calling for freedom in Tibet and in support of the Dalai Lama. It is claimed that he also urged Tibetans to be united and not to lose hope.
The Tibetan Government-in-Exile has said that local people pressured the Chinese authorities to hand the man’s body over to them for a funeral. Xinhua corroborates this.
Ten-nyi and Tsultrim, Ngaba, 6 January 2012, both died
The two men, both of whom were 20-years-old, set themselves on fire in Ngaba town on 6 January. An eye-witness account reports that Tsultrim, thought to be a lay person, set himself on fire near Kirti Monastery in Ngaba Town at around 2.50pm (local time). He is believed to have died the following night.
Ten-nyi set himself on fire nearby at the same time. He is reported to have died at the scene.

This is the first self-immolation known to have taken place in the Tibet Autonomous Region; Chamdo is nearly 500 kilometres west of Ngaba where many of the previous self-immolations have taken place.
Tenzin Phuntsog is believed to have formerly been a monk at Karma Monastery in Chamdo. The monastery is reported to have been under severe restrictions following reports of a bomb going off in a municipal building in Karma Township on 27 October 2011.

Tenzin Wangmo, Ngaba, 17 October 2011, died
Tenzin Wangmo, a 20-year-old nun, set herself on fire around 1pm outside Dechen Chokorling nunnery (also known as Mame nunnery), three kilometres from Ngaba Town. She died at the scene.
Tenzin called for religious freedom in Tibet and the return of the Dalai Lama. She walked about for up to eight minutes before she collapsed and died. She reportedly said to fellow nuns that morning that she "will have to do something of great importance".
Norbu Dathul, Ngaba, 15 October 2011, died
Norbu Dathul, 19, a former monk from Kirti monastery, set himself alight at the central market in Ngaba Town at around 11.50am local time on 15 October. It is reported that he died on 5 January 2012.
Norbu was seen running in flames and shouting for freedom for Tibet and for the return of the Dalai Lama. Police put out the flames and he was driven away in a police car. There are reports that the police beat him while they were trying to put out the flames.
Norbu became a monk at Kirti Monastery at an early age but he disrobed in June 2010.
Choepel and Khayang, Ngaba, 7 October 2011, both died
Choepel, 19, and Khayang, 18, set themselves on fire on 7 October in Ngaba Town. Khayang died the next day. Choepel is reported to have died on 11 October.
Choepel was expelled from Kirti Monastery following Phuntsog's self-immolation (see below). Khayang also used to be a monk. His uncle Tashi was killed by security forces in Ngaba on 16 March 2008 at the age of 27. They are both from Thawa Kongma village in Ngaba county.

Kalsang Wangchuk, Ngaba, 3 October 2011
Kalsang Wangchuk, a young monk believed to be 17 or 18 years old, from Kirti Monastery, Ngaba County, Eastern Tibet, set himself on fire on 3 October near the vegetable market in Ngaba Town.
He was reportedly holding a photograph of the Dalai Lama and shouted: "There are no religious rights and freedom in Tibet". The police put out the fire and took him away. His upper body is said to be very damaged. On that day Ngaba town was said to be under police and military control, nobody could enter or exit the town.

Lobsang Kalsang and Lobsang Konchok, Ngaba, 26 September 2011
Two young monks, Lobsang Kalsang and Lobsang Konchok, aged between 18 and 19 years old, also from Kirti monastery, set fire to themselves on 26 September. Lobsang Kalsang is the brother of Phuntsog (see below). The monks waved the banned Tibetan flag and called for religious freedom and “Long live the Dalai Lama” before they self-immolated. Their well-being and whereabouts are unknown.
Tsewang Norbu, Tawu, 15 August 2011, died
A 29-year-old monk, Tsewang Norbu, also known as Norko, set himself on fire in the centre of Tawu. He is from Nyitso Monastery where the monastic community had been intimidated by local authorities.
Tsewang Norbu drank petrol, sprayed himself with petrol and then set himself on fire. He was heard calling out: “We Tibetan people want freedom”, “Long live the Dalai Lama” and “Let the Dalai Lama Return to Tibet”. He died at the scene.

Palden Choetso, Tawu, 3 November 2011, died
Palden Choetso, 35, died after setting herself on fire on the Chume Bridge in the centre of Tawu. She set fire to herself at the same place as the monk Tsewang Norbu (see below). Palden Choetso is the second woman to set fire to herself. Dawa Tsering self-immolated in Kandze Town near his monastery, Kandze Monastery, on 25 October. Dawa is said to have suffered serious burns but his well-being and whereabouts are unknown. Lobsang Kalsang and Lobsang Konchok, Ngaba, 26 September 2011Tsewang Norbu, Tawu, 15 August 2011, diedTsewang Norbu drank petrol, sprayed himself with petrol and then set himself on fire. He was heard calling out: “We Tibetan people want freedom”, “Long live the Dalai Lama” and “Let the Dalai Lama Return to Tibet”. He died at the scene.

Phuntsog, Ngaba, 16 March 2011, died
Phuntsog, 21, from Kirti Monastery in Ngaba, set himself on fire on the third anniversary of demonstrations in Ngaba Town in 2008 when armed police shot dead at least 13 protestors. Phuntsog was heard calling for the return of the Dalai Lama. He died in hospital. Six monks, including Phuntsog's brother and uncle, have been sentenced in connection with Phuntsog's act, including “plotting and assisting” in the self-immolation and for delaying hospital treatment for Phuntsog. Phuntsog's best friend Darjee, who is only 16 years old, has been sentenced to three years re-education through labour, which the UN regards as a "systematic form of inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment, if not torture".Click here to read more

Tabe
Tabe, another monk from Kirti monastery, set himself on fire in February 2009. He is believed still to be in detention and his whereabouts remain unknown. Tabe’s parents are reportedly able to visit him at the invitation of authorities for very limited periods. Tabe has recently been used for propaganda purposes by the Chinese authorities. In July this year he was interviewed on a local TV channel where he said he regretted what he did. It is not possible to confirm if Tabe gave the interview under duress.
