Ganga is formed by two rivers upstream as the river Bhagirathi and Alaknanda River in the Mountains Himalayan state of Uttaranchal in India. Water sources are usually people admitted as Bhagirathi , a river that originates from a band at the height of 4,000 m and the smaller rivers in two tributaries of the Ganges. Ganges basin is the most populous region, the largest agricultural producers and the largest in India. In Asia , only the U.S. Northern Plains of China's population density is similar in this basin. In the western part of the Ganges delta, the river water supply and a system of canals with the main arterial channels Channel Upstream Ganges and Lower Ganges Canal . The staple food and cash crops cultivation and harvesting in this area are: rice , sugar , lentils , oilseeds , potatoes and wheat . Almost all of the Ganges River delta area has been reclaimed most trees and grass to serve agriculture . Typically, both sides of the river Ganges with wetlands and lakes. In areas of marsh and pond areas, people grow vegetables, rice, pepper , mustard, sesame (Sesame) and Plants of jute . Some forest areas are mangroves and crocodiles live. Because the water from the Ganges-capped peaks of ice snow , its water level remains high throughout the year and the river is still used as irrigation and even hot dry season from April to June. Summer rainy season, rainfall can cause floods raging, especially in the Delta.

Ethnic Hindu , majority ethnic populations of India, the Ganges is considered a sacred river: Ganga was the daughter of the mountain god Himavan or Himalaya. According to Hindu belief, bathing in the Ganges River is considered to be washed from sin, and rivers are widely used in cult ceremonies. Ganges water to drink before they die as a Hindu auspicious and many asked to be cremated along the Ganges and their lack of ash spread up the river. Hindu pilgrims on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Varanasi , where the religious ceremonies used to be conducted; Haridwar revered because it is where the Ganges leaves the Himalayas , while Allahabad , where the Saraswati River is legendary believed to be flowing into the Ganges. Every 12 years, a festival Purna Kumbha (Full Vac) was held in Haridwar and Allahabad in the festival which millions of people come to bathe in the Ganges. Pilgrims also to other sacred sites near the upper Ganges, including the Temple Mount under ice Gangotri .

Since the 1950s, population and industry industry along the river Ganges and Hugli has rapidly developed and industrial waste water and population have been poured into the river with huge numbers. In addition, because of the importance of religion of the Ganges, Hindus usually cremated and sprinkle both sides of the river and coal ash into the river, this is usually done in Varanasi . All these things have come together to cause water pollution the Ganges to bathe and drink at the river Ganges is becoming dangerous. In 1986, the Indian government launched a Ganga Action Plan , a program to reduce pollution to the river Ganges in 40 cities in the states of Uttar Pradesh , Bihar and West Bengal . Under this plan, waste water is passed through the block treatment plants. The electric furnace was also built and the two river area was redeveloped.
