THE FIRST NOBLE TRUTH.

There is suffering

The first noble truth is the truth of suffering. In other words, every single one of us experiences dissatisfaction, discontent, suffering, disease or other undesirable states of body and mind.
If we look objectively, all of us have experienced disappointment, physical illness, anxiety, fear, doubt or disturbing dreams at some point in our lives. Even for those who have everything, things are not always perfect, something will always be unsatisfactory. We have the suffering which comes from having to separate from what we want or having to meet what we don't desire, and the natural unpleasantness of sickness, old age and death. This is what is known as 'Dukkha', a word which comes from the Pali language and basically means the dissatisfaction that comes as a natural consequence of having an imperfect body and mind.
The first noble truth is not trying to say that everything is misery and woe. It is simply stating that there is suffering and that this suffering, to varying degrees, is within our experience. This life we have, therefore, is not a totally satisfactory state of being.
