The Dhammapada
The Dhammapada verses are said to be the words of Buddha Sakyamuni, the great sage known as The Buddha. These words are teachings that give you guidance on your path, to and of, truth and freedom. It has been said that these words are the full intention of what the Buddha taught summed up into simple, concise verses.
There are 26 chapters comprised of 423 verses. This work is a part of the Sutta Pitaka. The Sutta Pitaka is the second division or basket of the Tipitaka.
There are many translations of the Dhammapada. This version is that of F. Max Muller, a religious historian. It was first published in 1870. This version has a Christian scripture 'feel' to it because that was the way Buddhist texts were translated back then.
Later translations have evolved tremendously. Still, it doesn't take much insight to understand the worth of these verses, no matter the translation.
Dhamma and Pada are two Pali words, Dhamma, and Pada. Pada refers to path (in this case), and Dhamma or Dharma means teaching. Dhamma/Dharma can also mean universal truth, virtue, etc. It depends on the context.
Now, The Dhammapada can be translated to english in several different ways. All of which give you a good idea as to the intention: The Path of the Dhamma/Dharma, Sayings of the Dhamma/Dharma, Teachings of the Dhamma/Dharma.
The idea and intention is clear. This work of verses gives the reader a good source of reference and understanding into the Buddha's teachings. Please enjoy!
